FIELD NOTE// The Drifter Phenomenon: Unsane, Season to Risk and Drifter at recordBar
FIELD NOTE// THE DRIFTER PHENOMENON
THE DRIFTER PHENOMENON// THE PRE-SUMMONING
The bass was rolling forward as they conspired over the equipment they would later use to summon the things before the old gods came to be, open The Void, and become the portal to whatever lay on the other side.

The raccoon has been ruminating on the Drifter Phenomenon. This is dangerous. Raccoons left alone with unanswered questions have been known to open containers, dismantle established theories, and investigate things that were probably sealed for a reason.
The original hypothesis was that the members of Drifter were Live Music Deities. The evidence supported this. Mostly.
The Keeper of Time controls forces the raccoon cannot adequately measure.
The Architect of Pressure alters the gravity of entire rooms.
Old Man Gloom communicates with The Completely Sentient Junk Rig while behaving as though none of this is unusual.
The Hair Gods recognize him. The Guitar Gods respond. The Lighting Gods appear when properly summoned. The Photography Gods leave evidence the raccoon does not remember collecting. Drifter is unquestionably Live Music Deity-adjacent. However, further observation has revealed an important distinction.
Drifter is not The Void. Drifter is not composed of the ancient things that live inside it. Drifter may not even be responsible for what happens after it opens. Drifter is the portal. The threshold. The point where the known habitat ends and something much older begins. Something that mumbles in mud and rock languages.
The Drifter Phenomenon is the process through which that threshold opens.
First, The Keeper of Time establishes the rhythm required to disturb whatever is sleeping beneath the room.
Then The Architect of Pressure changes the atmospheric conditions. The air becomes heavier. The walls become less reliable. Gravity begins behaving personally.
Old Man Gloom approaches The Completely Sentient Junk Rig. Communication occurs. The creature glows. The offering is accepted. Then the room changes. The raccoon can still see the stage. She can still hear the instruments. She can still operate the camera. But she is no longer observing a performance. She is crossing through it.
Time becomes unreliable. The audience stops behaving like a collection of separate humans. The raccoon forgets she is supposed to be documenting culture because, for several impossible minutes, there is no culture.
There is no photographer.
There is no audience.
There may not be a room.
There is only pressure. Rhythm. Gravity. And the unmistakable sensation that something on the other side has noticed the door is open.
sThat is the Drifter Phenomenon. Drifter does not bring The Void into the room. Drifter becomes the threshold through which everyone else enters The Void that was already there.
THE DRIFTER PHENOMEMON// THE SOUND ELF
The raccoon is always working to refine her taxonomy. Species classification is serious work. The raccoon has discovered that there are many sound elves and each one has a name. This one is Taylor Samson. Taylor is everywhere THE DRIFTER PHENOMEMON// SEASON TO RISK
If Drifter was the threshold that carried everyone inside The Void, Season to Risk picked us all up on the other side and drove us straight over the edge into The Abyss. Pedal to the metal. No seat belts. No guardrails. No responsible adult asking whether this seemed wise.
The raccoon had barely established that the laws of gravity were no longer reliable when Season to Risk arrived, loaded every creature in the room into an unmarked vehicle made entirely of Kansas City noise rock, and accelerated toward something darker. This was not the crew’s first journey. Season to Risk has been producing dangerous levels of noise from Kansas City since 1989. They spent their early years touring with bands including Killdozer, Killing Joke, Prong, Neurosis—and Unsane.
They had major-label support from Columbia Records during the alternative-rock rush of the early 1990s. They could have made something easier. They did not.
Instead, Season to Risk used the opportunity to enter Martin Bisi’s enormous subterranean studio—the same producer connected to Sonic Youth, Swans, Foetus, and Cop Shoot Cop—and created In a Perfect World: a darker, dissonant, punishing collision of post-hardcore and noise rock.
This is important evidence.
Season to Risk has apparently been locating subterranean spaces, ignoring safer routes, and driving toward stranger sounds for more than thirty-five years. They even appeared as a nightclub band in the 1995 dystopian film Strange Days.
The raccoon is beginning to suspect this was not acting.
There was no time to reconsider. No opportunity to return through the portal. The threshold had already closed behind us. Season to Risk did not summon The Abyss. They have been navigating it since 1989.
They knew exactly where it was. Even better, they knew a shortcut.
Drifter opened The Void. Season to Risk drove us through it—and straight over the edge.
THE DRIFTER PHENOMEMON// THEY AREN'T CRAZY, JUST UNSANE
They are not crazy. They are just…Unsane.
The raccoon suspects nearly everyone, everywhere, has occupied this precise psychological territory at least once. Not crazy. Not entirely reasonable. Not necessarily interested in discussing the distinction. Just… Unsane.
This was the destination. This was where we had been heading all along.
Drifter was threshold into The Void. Season to Risk collected everyone on the other side, loaded us into an unmarked vehicle made entirely of Kansas City noise rock, and drove us straight over the edge into The Abyss.
Unsane was waiting. This should not have been surprising.
Unsane began crawling through the less reputable regions of New York City in the late 1980s, building an abrasive form of noise rock from hardcore punk, metal, industrial sound, distorted guitar, punishing low end, and the kind of percussion that suggests the machinery has become aware of the humans operating it. They helped establish the blueprint for the noise-metal creatures that followed.
For decades, Unsane has produced music that sounds like New York City infrastructure developing rage, gaining mobility, and coming directly toward you.The destination that night was Occupational Hazard.
Unsane’s fourth full-length album emerged from the pre-millennial underground as a particularly concentrated collision of punk, metal, industrial noise, and urban pressure. Its song “Committed” later escaped containment through the original Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater soundtrack, introducing countless young humans to Unsane while they repeatedly propelled digital skateboarders into concrete.
This seems like an entirely appropriate delivery system.
In 2026, Occupational Hazard was remastered, and Unsane began performing the album in its entirety for the first time. At recordBar, the raccoon understood why the entire expedition had been necessary.
Drifter prepared the threshold. Season to Risk eliminated every remaining opportunity for retreat. Unsane was where the road ended. Or possibly where the road had been violently removed.
The sound was not waiting politely onstage. It occupied the room. It entered the body through structural weaknesses.
It rattled against the ribs, climbed the spine, and located every small internal place where a human has ever thought: I am not crazy. I am just tired. Or furious. Or overloaded. Or surviving. Or considerably less fine than I have led the other humans to believe.
Not crazy. Just… Unsane.
This was not a detour into The Abyss. This was the destination marked on the map from the beginning.
Drifter opened The Void. Season to Risk drove us over the edge. Unsane was waiting at the bottom.
THE DRIFTER PHENOMEMON// THE THRESHOLD AND THE WATCHERS
Before the field note closes, the available intelligence concerning Drifter must be entered into the record.
Drifter emerged from Lawrence, Kansas, in 2022. The trio consists of: Brodie Belt on guitars, pedalboard, and auxiliary percussion. Joel Denton on drums and percussion. Dean Edington on bass, vocals, electric cello, and the collection of electronics still being investigated under the scientifically accurate designation The Completely Sentient Junk Rig.
Together, they combine dark ambience, primal noise, rhythmic thunder, post-rock tension, sludge, doom, and enormous riffs into something frequently identified as post-metal. This description is technically useful.
It does not explain the Drifter Phenomenon.
The first warning arrived in 2022 as Herald, an apocalyptic piece of foreshadowing that introduced the shape of what was approaching. It was followed in May 2025 by Drifter’s debut full-length album, Grigori, released through Thoughtcrime Digital.
Grigori contains nine tracks. This is probably not an accident.
The album begins with [INTERVAL> Grigori], passes through Catalyst Tongues, The Tide, Hunger and Haunt, Dead Sea Teeth, The Silence That Follows, and The Flood, then leaves the listener with [INTERVAL> Carenta].
These are not merely song titles. They read like warnings posted along a path the raccoon followed anyway.
Research indicates Grigori means “the Watchers” or “the wakeful ones.” In ancient apocryphal tradition, the Grigori were celestial beings sent to observe humanity. Some crossed the boundary between their world and ours, descended to Earth, shared forbidden knowledge, and became associated with the Nephilim.
Watchers. Threshold-crossers.
Live Music Deity-adjacent beings who descended, interfered with the ecosystem, and left behind something enormous. The raccoon is sure this resemblance is coincidental. Mostly.
Grigori was identified early as the first full-length entry in Drifter’s Garden of Forking Paths album cycle. The name evokes a labyrinth in which time branches, multiple futures exist, and every choice creates another possible direction.
Again: Probably coincidental.
The album itself was recorded over approximately a year and a half. Drifter produced it with Eric Graves, who engineered, mixed, and mastered the record at the Gravy Cave. The music was written by Belt, Denton, and Edington. The result takes the atmosphere and warning contained in Herald and gives them mass.
Joel—the Keeper of Time—uses drums and percussion to establish the rhythms necessary to disturb what sleeps beneath the room.
Brodie—the Architect of Pressure aka Young Man Gloom- uses guitar, pedalboard, and auxiliary percussion to build tension until the air becomes heavier and the architecture begins making private decisions.
Dean—Old Man Gloom—moves between bass, vocals, electric cello, and the Completely Sentient Junk Rig as though communicating with primordial machinery is a perfectly ordinary responsibility for one human to carry.
Independent accounts describe Grigori as dark, dramatic, immersive, emotionally heavy, and capable of substantial sonic damage. Reviewers have compared its vastness to bands including Isis, Neurosis, Pelican, Russian Circles, and Glassing while emphasizing that Drifter does not remain inside any one established container.
The band itself confirmed this while discussing The Tide. It was one of the earliest Drifter compositions and the point at which they realized they could explore anything they wanted.
There was no box. Synth bass? Electric cello? Yes. Texture, atmosphere, disparate sounds, and art for its own sake? Also yes.
This explains a great deal. The Tide does not simply describe water. It establishes the pull. The Flood applies the pressure. Dead Sea Teeth suggests the water has developed anatomy. The Silence That Follows confirms that something happened before the room became quiet again. Grigori watches the entire process.
This brings the raccoon back to the developing theory. Drifter is not The Void. Drifter is not the collection of ancient things waiting inside it. Drifter is the portal. The threshold. The point where the familiar habitat ends and something older begins mumbling in mud and rock languages. The Drifter Phenomenon is what opens that threshold.
On October 10, Drifter will perform at Lucia in Lawrence, Kansas. The raccoon suggests everyone experience The Void, with Drifter as the threshold, at least once. Possibly more. Each time they will take you deeper.
THE RACCOON HAS LEFT THE BUILDING
Eventually, the raccoon left recordBar. Physically. Parts of her may still be inside The Void. Further investigation is required.
She arrived expecting three bands. What she encountered was a complete expedition with a beginning, a route, and a destination.
Drifter opened the threshold. The Drifter Phenomenon altered the room until The Void became accessible. The Keeper of Time established the rhythm. The Architect of Pressure changed the gravity. Old Man Gloom communicated with The Completely Sentient Junk Rig.
The offering was accepted. The portal opened. The raccoon crossed through it willingly.
Season to Risk was waiting on the other side with more than thirty-five years of Kansas City noise-rock experience and absolutely no interest in returning anyone safely to familiar territory. They knew the way to The Abyss because they had apparently been driving this route since 1989. Then we arrived at the destination. Unsane.
Not crazy. Just… Unsane. There are moments when the world becomes too loud, too heavy, too fast, too sharp, and far too full of humans behaving like humans.
You are not crazy. You are tired. Furious. Overloaded. Surviving. Or considerably less fine than you have allowed the other humans to notice.
Sometimes the most honest response is not silence. Sometimes it is noise.
Abrasive guitar. Pounding drums. Distorted bass. A voice pushed through the machinery until whatever has been trapped beneath the ribs finally has somewhere else to go.
That night was not three unrelated performances. It was a sequence.
Drifter opened The Void.
Season to Risk drove us through it.
Unsane was waiting at the bottom.
Then the lights came up. The equipment became equipment again. The humans gradually returned to their individual bodies. The laws of gravity resumed their usual duties. Probably.
The raccoon checked her camera. The Photography Gods had left evidence. She collected what she could. The rest must be remembered through pressure, rhythm, damaged expectations, and the lingering suspicion that something ancient noticed us passing through.
The raccoon has left the building. The Void remains.
ROMANTICIZING THE VOID RESPONSIBLY. DOOM IS AUDIBLE.

CONDUCT YOUR OWN FIELD RESEARCH
Field observations are subjective.
The raccoon strongly recommends conducting your own research.
Enter carefully. Listen loudly.
Determine for yourself whether Drifter is a threshold, whether Season to Risk knows the fastest route into The Abyss, and whether you are crazy—or merely Unsane.

This is Alethea—the photographer, stagehand, behavior scientist, and designated human attached to this operation.
She documents the people, rituals, machinery, and beautiful disorder of live culture. She carries the camera, follows the evidence, and keeps wandering into places most humans never think to look.
The raccoon provides responsible supervision. Obviously.
